Course description
The aim of the programme - similarly to other teacher majors - is to prepare candidates having acquired a mathematics B.Sc or other degree to teach mathematics in public education, to do pedagogical research and continue their studies in PhD courses (mostly in methodological topics dealing with education of mathematics). It is possible within the current unified teacher training at M.A. master programs based on basic education.
Career
Mathematics has been and will be taught as a major subject in all types of schools. Great number of lessons requires adequate number of teachers so job possibilities are good at primary and secondary schools, since students will be familiar with both primary and secondary methodology, therefore they can easily change from one type of school to the other. Mathematics teacher degree has been a good reference for sixty years.
Those completing their studies excellent have a possibility to become tutors in higher education, apply for PhD programs mainly in methodology of Mathematics and then make their career in this field. Fluent language knowledge will make them capable of teaching Mathematics in a foreign language give them a chance to make further foreign connections.
For those who decide to leave the profession Mathematics skills and thinkingare an asset which can be utilised in other fields as well.
Focus of the training
Two basic fields are concentrated on during the course: students acquiring a degree at us get solid theoretical matematical knowledge -indispensible when teaching mathematics. Therefore besides theoretical mathematical knowledge acquired at the basic program further theoretical topics are taught emphasising their scolastic relations. Topics to be taught are the major classical ones, eg. Algebra, Number Theory, Anaysis, Geometrics, etc.
The other major area is to teach them methodology, education of Mathematics, teaching Mathematics at primary and secondary schools, supporting talents. Preparation for Mathematics education based on competence is of utmost importance and also emphasis is put on practical studies. The most talented students are encouraged and supported to do research.
Pedagogical and psychological skills are also dominant parts of teacher training. They are taught by competent professionals.
General information
- Name of qualification in the degree: teacher of mathematics
- Course length: for candidates with B.Sc degree 2 years + one semester professional placement (all 4 + 1 semester), 12O + 30 credits
- for candidates with a former mathematics teacher degree 2 semesters, 60 credits at one major and 3 semesters, 90 credits at two majors.
- Form of study: MA, full-time and correspondence training
- Language requirements: Intermediate, complex (oral and written) exam. One semester foreign internship is possible with appropriate language skills.
- Entry requirements: Mathematics B.Sc or mathematics teacher college degree or college/university degree with minimum 50 mathematics credits and successful entrance exam.
- Peculiarities of the program: Mathematics teacher training to teach at 5-12 classes in public education.
